EDUCATION DESIGN SHOWCASE • MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL
GRAND PRIZE WINNER
WINTHROP MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL WINTHROP PUBLIC SCHOOLS
WINTHROP, MA
WINTHROP’S new 970-stu- dent middle/high school design is a showcase for student achievement and community pride. The new school is outfitted for 21st- century, hands-on learning. Students have an exciting variety of learning and social spaces, including expanded opportunities to experi- ence science, technology, and arts education outside of a traditional classroom. Specialty spaces include a vocational fabrication and carpentry space for the unique “Viking Long Ship” program, culinary arts café, state of the art science labs, and learning commons. This variety of hands-on learning spaces complements the STEAM-centered middle school curriculum and inter- disciplinary team teaching at the high school.
The building contains two distinct zones for the middle and high school joined by shared core facilities including the gymnasium, library, kitchen, and 580-seat auditorium. Each zone houses a three- story conical lightwell which creates beautiful gathering spaces that funnel daylight throughout each floor of the building.
At each of the school’s en- trances, important program pieces pop out of the build- ing volume, both to draw attention to the entrance and to highlight programs impor- tant to the community such as the fine and performing arts. Architectural elements conjure nautical themes to reflect the school’s ocean- front context, from a wave pattern to the evocation of a ship’s sail.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Nice integration of the middle and high school. Good use of super graphics. Connection of learning space to the outdoor space is also a nice feature.
