EDUCATION DESIGN SHOWCASE • HIGH SCHOOL
PROJECT OF DISTINTION
EASTVALE STEM ACADEMY AT ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL CORONA-NORCO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
EASTVALE, CA
THE ESTEM (Eastvale Sci- ence, Technology, Engi- neering and Mathematics) Academy is a specialized campus addition to Eleanor Roosevelt High School. This academy aims to build a “school within a school”, finding the balance between creating a strong sense of identity for a new special- ized campus while fostering an inclusive environment where eSTEM and ERHS students alike feel welcome. This quotient shapes every- thing from the program, to building and site design, to site location. As important as the connection between campuses is the great sensitivity to respecting the privacy of adjacent neigh- boring homes, complicating this balancing act.
Community engagement and input held a critical
role in the design of this school, shaping the pro- gram and architecture of the eSTEM Academy before the architectural planning process even began. CNUSD led this effort to design a state-of-the-art STEM learn- ing facility that addresses strong community needs in the medical and engineer- ing professions. The district engaged local colleges, universities, and prominent professionals in the afore- mentioned fields early on to gain a better understand- ing of the skills needed of a graduating student in order to succeed in both higher education and work place- ment. This engagement helped shape the innovat- ing program and learning spaces of this school.
