EDUCATION DESIGN SHOWCASE • PK-8
PROJECT OF DISTINCTION
OCPS ACADEMIC CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE ORANGE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT
ORLANDO, FL
LOCATED IN THE Parra- more neighborhood, the project is a brand-new prototype school within downtown Orlando. The 251,812-square-foot school is the first-of-its-kind pre- school through eighth grade school, housing all students onto one campus. Through and through, the project is the embodiment of com- munity and collaboration. It is a Community Partnership School, allowing it a unique and stable relationship with community partners that fully support it by ensuring resources for the overall benefit and advancement
of students—in both school and community life. The partnerships were formed with the University of Central Florida, Valencia College, Children’s Home Society of Florida, Orange Blossom Family Health, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Flor- ida, and Rosen Foundation. Together, the collaboration merges early childhood education, afterschool pro- grams, healthcare, mentor- ing, and family support.
Baker Barrios Architects (in association with HKS) was challenged to create
a design that would house programs for the students from each of these partners. These programs would range from classrooms for the elementary and middle schools, to spaces for on-site dental and health services from the Orange Blossom Family Health, and even spaces for after-school activ- ities and faculties from the Boys & Girls Club, all which would connect the partners and the community.
