INDUSTRY UPDATE
that N95 manufacturers will be able to submit a single application to NIOSH rather than submitting paperwork for clearance and ap- proval from both agencies.
“The FDA action is the first step in streamlining an approval process that was redundant and burdensome,” said Maryann D’Alessandro, director of NIOSH’s National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory. “NIOSH will continue to ensure these res- pirators provide the expected performance levels and are safe for their intended use.”
NIOSH will now evaluate the N95 manufacturer’s test data and conduct post-market audits for flammability, biocompatibility, and fluid resistance to make sure they meet relevant standards during its approval process. These evaluations were previously undertaken by the FDA.
NIOSH will begin accepting applications to put this process into practice on July 2, 2018 for manufacturers intending to sub- mit N95 filtering facepiece respirators for approval in health care settings.
New ASSP Standard Covers Wind Turbine Construction, Demolition
The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) announced that the ANSI/ASSP A10.21 standard, Safety Requirements for Safe Construction and Demolition of Wind Generation/Turbine Facili- ties, has been approved. It is the first industry consensus standard
written specifically for wind construction. It applies to utility-scale, land-based wind generation/turbine facilities, establishing mini- mum safety requirements and recommended best practices.
“Wind energy has unique challenges that are simply not ad- equately addressed in existing standards,” said Chris Daniels, the chair of the A10.21 subcommittee. “A10.21 brings these challenges to light and identifies appropriate mitigation means.”
Publication of the A10.21-2018 standard was anticipated for June 2018, according to the society.
