Shawn Henry
President of the Services Division and Chief Security Officer
CrowdStrike
Leading from the front. In 2020, CrowdStrike Services saw a spike in cyber intrusions, larger ransomware demands and little opportunity for organizations to improve their secu- rity posture during the chaos brought on by the global pandemic. Henry and his team sprang into action by identi- fying and preventing adversaries from attacking at-risk industries and pro- viding the public with much-needed information on cyberthreats. His team also helped scores of clients conduct compromise assessments, proactive cyber drills and simulated tabletop exercises so they would be prepared for a real-life security incident. Henry also helped leaders worldwide bet- ter understand their organizations’ defenses, risks and high-value targets.
Derek Herbert
Deputy Director, Office ofTransition and Economic Development, Veterans Benefits Administration
Department of Veterans Affairs
Mission-driven AI. Herbert spear- headed VBA’s transformation of
the mail-based intake process for veterans’ benefits claims. He fostered unparalleled government/industry col- laboration and used robotic process automation to reduce the process-
ing time for veterans’ claims from 20 days to 30 minutes. His leadership of the Mail Automation System initiative directly contributed to VBA’s ability to accomplish this feat in less than one year and achieve full author-
ity to operate in an unprecedented
11 months. In addition, Herbert was instrumental in deploying a customer- centric approach to claims process- ing, fully eliminating a mail-processing backlog and reassigning over 300 VA employees to more complex claims- processing responsibilities.
Steven Hernandez
Chief Information Security Officer
Education Department
Championing zero trust. Hernandez has been an influential figure across government, driving improvements
in cybersecurity and being an early advocate and thought leader for zero trust architecture. Beyond his leader- ship at DOE, he also serves as vice chairman of the Federal CISO Council and government chairman of the ACT-IAC Cybersecurity Community of Interest. He consistently stresses the importance of engaging with industry on new approaches to cybersecurity and mentoring the next generation
of cybersecurity leaders. Hernandez has also worked with the General Ser- vices Administration to help automate and streamline the processing of secu- rity control requirements for cloud service providers under FedRAMP.
Casey Hurt
Technical Director, Cloud Computing Program Office, Defense Information Systems Agency
Defense Department
Collaboration in a time of COVID.
Hurt led the engineering team that designed and deployed the Com- mercial Virtual Remote environment, which provided more than 1 million
DOD users with Office 365 collabora- tion capabilities within 30 days and preserved military force readiness while enabling nearly total telework. With a team of fewer than 10 people, Hurt devised custom provisioning scripts (surpassing Microsoft’s record of user accounts provisioned per day), a holistic security approach that integrates DOD cyber defense with commercial tools that leverage artificial intelligence, and the first-of- its-kind tailoring of certain features and functions to meet DOD’s security requirements.
Matt Huston
Chief Information Security Officer, Platform One
Department of the Air Force
Securing the software factories.
The Air Force has built an impressive ecosystem of software factories in the past few years, and Huston has been instrumental throughout the process. After being one of two initial software developers at Kessel Run, he helped ensure the successful launch of Space Camp then turned in late 2019 to Plat- form One, which is now the Defense Department’s preferred enterprise DevSecOps services provider. As CISO, Huston played a key role in building and securing Kubernetes- based infrastructure as code. One senior Air Force executive called him “one of the most talented software engineers and tech strategists in the Department of Defense.”
