EDUCATION DESIGN SHOWCASE • COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES
GRAND PRIZE
MILLIKAN LABORATORY AND ANDREW SCIENCE HALL POMONA COLLEGE
CLAREMONT, CA
THE MILLIKAN Laboratory is situated in the center of the Science District. The project’s objectives were to bring the Science District on par with the elegance of the surrounding campus while providing a highly effective and efficient laboratory building designed to meet current and future curricu- lums, which includes high- performance research labs, student-centered learning spaces, ample daylight
and views, and spaces that encourage student collabo- ration and socialization.
Millikan was accom- plished by a collaborative design process that encour- aged the collaboration of the building’s stakeholders, faculty, students, and staff from two distinctly different departments. The collabora- tive process allowed the vi- sion and aspirations of each department to be realized collectively and individually, resulting in an amazingly efficient and effective teach- ing and research learning environment.
The design inspires cur- rent and future programs, teaching, and research facilities with active learn- ing, labs, and collaborative spaces; creates central math and physics community hubs and breakout spaces; encourages accessibility be- tween faculty and students through the location and layout of offices, class- rooms, and labs; provides a state-of-the-art facility that creates open and inviting areas for labs, shops, and a planetarium; and provides
a healthy environment through efficient HVAC, sun- light, and clean air.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The execution of the project vision is strong. I love the outdoor interactives. Good choice of interior colors and materials. Creative use of glass, creating transparency. A very well-executed project that goes beyond preserva- tion/restoration.
