GOODRICH HALL NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY

GOODRICH HALL is part of a series of recent North- western University residen- tial projects designed to promote a sense of commu- nity. Originally constructed in 1932, it was renovated with new lounges, study spaces, and a small kitchen on the first floor. Sleep-
ing rooms have been kept simple and compact to en- courage residents to mingle in the common spaces. An apartment was incorpo- rated into the lower level for a member of the faculty and their family to live in close proximity to the stu- dents. Loosely based on the traditional college system within a university, it allows for casual interactions and mentorship opportunities.
The renovation included the complete restoration of the original ornate brick- work. The masonry at the new additions used brick from the original manu- facturer, who still had the original color formula. All mechanical systems were completely replaced and
air conditioning was added, which enabled summertime use of the building. A new accessible entrance as well as accessible sleeping rooms and bathrooms were added. Important historic features, both at the exterior and interior, were restored.
With community as the impetus, the building has been carefully transformed while maintaining the inti- mate scale and delicate de- tailing of the original. It is the backdrop for a new direction in collegiate residential life for the university.

This project has a museum- like quality to it. It kept char- acteristics and the charm of the old building. Just enough upgrades to result in a lovely project. Sophisticated, clean design.
