CENTER FOR HEALTH SCIENCES
MORAVIAN COLLEGE BETHLEHEM, PA
THIS NEW 57,000-square- foot Health Sciences Building is dedicated to training students for allied health professions. Located at a prominent intersection that visually connects Moravian College’s historic campus, main campus, and ath-
letic campus, this signature building houses the Nursing Department and space for Health Sciences undergradu- ate students and faculty. Featured academic spaces include simulation and skills labs, classrooms (including three flexible classrooms), general chemistry lab, mi- crobiology lab, anatomy and physiology lab, research labs, health informatics computer lab, and faculty offices.
Other notable spaces include a flat-floor audi- torium that is also utilized for collegiate gatherings, a VR cadaver lab, and future computer-enhanced virtual environment (CAVE). The design also provides soft study areas for students to collaborate and socialize. The building references the campus’ Dutch architectural influence and utilizes local stone. A key design feature, a glass atrium, connects Main Street with a new cam- pus quad while a three-story tower prominently display- ing the college’s Moravian star symbol serves as an im- portant campus wayfinding element. A new café further enhances the streetscape along Main Street.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
I like the clarity of the plan and how the building has been shaped to address the site. The layout and plan- ning are very good. A nice variety of casual/collaborative spaces.
