EDUCATION DESIGN SHOWCASE • MIDDLE SCHOOL
HONORABLE MENTION
MUSKEGO LAKES MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSKEGO-NORWAY SCHOOL DISTRICT
MUSKEGO, WISC.
THE NEW 136,836-square- foot Muskego Lakes Middle School fulfills Muskego- Norway School District’s desire for collaborative learning spaces. It features a two-story academic wing organizing grades into “neighborhoods.” Each consists of five classrooms organized around a shared resource area to support collaboration, group work, and project-based learning. Three of the five classrooms have sliding glass doors that open into the resource area and all classrooms have an Epson BrightLink interac- tive display to encourage collaboration. The building includes science labs, tech- nical education classrooms for student and community use, and a state-of-the-art “Phab Lab” maker space.
In the two-story library, students can congregate
on the “learning stair” or
in large and small group in- structional spaces. It opens directly into the gathering area and corridor, thus mak- ing it more accessible and holistically integrated into learning environments.
To create a feeling of unity, a “pixel” motif is depicted through flooring choices, wall graphics, and interior panels. It represents how many parts can unite into a community. Addition- ally, each neighborhood cor- responds with a color, giving grades individual identities and serving as a means of wayfinding.
In this welcome addition to the district, students and teachers are encouraged
to push the boundaries of traditional learning and teaching.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This seems like it would be
a good place to work or be
a student. Nice welcoming rotunda. Great transparency between learning spaces and the outdoors. The design cre- ates a good visual connection between the learner and the observer. It is a well-orga- nized middle school.
