EDUCATION DESIGN SHOWCASE • HIGH SCHOOL
PROJECT OF DISTINCTION
TOHOPEKALIGA High School is a multi-dimensional STEAM school that emphasizes flex- ibility, adaptability, encour- ages collaboration and allows for project-based learning to occur. This 21st-century high school contains traditional classrooms, as well as adap- tive classrooms with flexible furniture and movable parti- tions. This modular design accommodates independent learning, a maker space, and/ or small lecture hall within the same area.
The academic spaces also include specialized programs that respond to the needs of the local com- munity with health sciences and technology career and technical education labs. Additionally, the high school has a robust school of arts program. The architecture and learning courtyards within the campus are de- signed to uniquely support these programs.
The media center
has also been designed
as a 21st-century learn-
ing environment with the space broken into zones for collaboration, socializing, and focused work. The media center also contains a dedicated testing suite that can accommodate up to 860 students as needed.
The design process also included a campus master plan that provides cost ef- fective shared space for a future middle school on the same site. For sustainability, the campus contains all LED and energy-efficient fix- tures, low-emitting finishes, and bi-polar ionization. Sunshades and overhangs provide passive cooling by reducing solar heat gain.
