Wake County Public School System Completes Numerous Projects
The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), in central North Carolina, recently completed work across seven facilities. The work was performed during summer 2018 and completed by Dewberry, a privately held pro- fessional services firm, in time for students, faculty, and staff to return in mid-August.
The firm’s services included engineer- ing design and construction administra- tion support for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems
for the new three-story Apex Friendship Middle School; window replacements and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrades at Enloe High School; swing space renovation and site work at Wiley Elementary School; wall settlement at Fuquay-Varina Elementary School; concrete settlement at Cary High School; elevator modernizations at Athens Drive High School; and mobile unit installations at Oak View Elementary School.

National Facilities Management & Tech- nology (NFMT) is a trade show and educa- tional conference for facility professionals responsible for the management, operations, maintenance, renovation, and construction of non-residential buildings. HISD’s Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts Opens Construction has now been completed
on Houston Independent School District’s new Kinder High School for the Perform- ing and Visual Arts (Kinder HSPVA). The replacement school, located near Houston’s renowned Theater District, features special- ized performance and fine arts spaces to en- hance the artistic environment of the unique school. McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. served as the construction manager at-risk and collaborated with the design team, Gensler, from the beginning of the project to ensure the vision of the school came to life. The project broke ground in February 2016, topped out in May 2017, and was com- pleted August 2018. The campus officially opened its doors to students when they returned from winter break on Jan. 7 with
a grand opening scheduled for Feb. 4. The 168,000-square-foot replacement school, located near Houston’s renowned Theater District, features specialized performance and fine arts spaces to enhance the artistic environment of the unique school.
Growing Queens Public School Gets Innovative Expansion
In New York City’s dense and diverse Corona neighborhood of Queens, the K-12 architecture firm MBB (Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects) has completed an expansion and renovation of the borough’s largest elementary school, bringing an inspiring new building, learning spaces, and other vital community amenities to a crowded district. Effectively doubling the size of P.S. 19 Marino P. Jeantet School, the ground-up, five-story expansion replaces temporary trailer structures with 97,000 square feet of much-needed classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasium areas, and specialty instruction spaces for art, music, and sci- ence, as well as space for neighborhood programs delivering social and health services. The new building connects to the school’s historic 1923 main building with
a new shared core, creating a cohesive new building to serve a large student body.
Nation’s Superintendents to Gather in Los Angeles for AASA Conference
Hundreds of public school superintendents are meeting in Los Angeles, Feb. 14-16, for the 2019 National Conference on Education. Hosted by AASA, The School Superintendents Association, and themed “Effective Leadership Creates Success,” the conference will provide attendees opportunities to engage with their peers about improving academic outcomes for the more than 50 million students learning in our public schools every day.
