Theft, Crime Driving
Away Retail Workers
of any business. But in the
Employees are the backbone
retail sector, thanks to the
continuing problems of
theft and retail crime, em-
ployees seem to be fed up.
According to a report released in De-
cember 2024 from the Loss Prevention
Research Council (LPRC) in partnership
with Verkada, a whopping 40 percent of
retail workers are considering leaving their
jobs in the next 12 months because of per-
sonal safety concerns.
Along with that astounding stat, more
than 25 percent of respondents felt unsafe
at work and 54 percent experienced cus-
tomer aggression or harassment. Even
with those persistent issues, 22 percent of
the respondents said their workplace had
minimal or no security. And in the last 12
months, 62 percent said their company
had not changed security levels.
In the survey, retail workers strongly
believed that additional security would be
helpful. Seventy-one percent of workers
who have experienced some type of vio-
lence indicated that they would feel safer
with improved security. More than 75 per-
cent also believed theft and robbery could
have been prevented with better security
measures.
Law enforcement also pays a key role
in retail security. But interestingly, just 52
percent reported violent incidents to law
enforcement.
“Retail is a cornerstone of the econo-
my, supporting 1 in 4 American jobs. The
unfortunate reality is that today, retail
workers are being asked to shoulder un-
acceptable risks every time they clock into
work,” said Read Hayes, Ph.D., Executive
Director of the Loss Prevention Research
Council. “This research provides a sober-
ing snapshot of that reality, and builds on
the Loss Prevention Research Council’s
ongoing work to provide a roadmap for
how retailers can better protect their em-
ployees and merchandise, and important-
ly, create safer work environments.”
With improved security, retailers can
create a better environment for both work-
ers and shoppers.
