Product Offerings Increase
In addition to call stations that provide emergency communication and mass notifi- cation, Talkaphone’s product portfolio has grown to include tower housings and wall mounts, access control with IP video and area of rescue.
Shanes, a trained attorney—as was his father—says Talkaphone has been able to add value by integrating, and exceeding, the many legal codes and mandates that go hand in hand with delivering life safety products.
After the Americans with Disabilities Act passed in 1990, the company developed the first ADA-compliant hands-free emergency phone. In accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 130 code for mass transit applications, the blue light stations can contain an emergency shutoff button to cut power to train tracks to avoid electrocution if someone were to fall on the tracks or if emergency personnel need access to the tracks. The company has committed to more than just the minimum requirements, however, by surpassing industry expecta-
tions. All current outdoor emergency phones are IP66 rated against dust and water intru- sion per International Electrotechnical Com- mission (IEC) standards.
Shanes says a key component to Talka- phone’s success has been building—and main- taining—long-term relationships with clients.
“I think one of the main factors behind our longevity is the fact that we are commit- ted to those we work with whether it’s a dis- tributor, consultant, integrator or end user,” Shanes said. “Each project is important and we do whatever is needed to achieve success, even long after the sale. We had a phone call recently from a man who had a Talkaphone intercom from the 1950s. He wanted to see if we had a manual or schematics so we went back and did some research in our files and were able to provide what he needed.”
Because they develop products that are charged with providing emergency assis- tance, Shanes said, above all, they must be reliable, durable and intelligible.

From record players to life-saving emergency communications systems
1930s
Takaphone starts as a successful record player manufacturer. The low cost player is a bar- gain at only $15.25. By the end of the 30s, Talkaphone has begun to engineer wood-paneled intercoms.
1940s
During the World War II years, Talkaphone was classified by the government as an “Essential Industry.” Their intercoms were used by American defense plants to increase efficiency and by the military in a variety of settings, including Landing Ship Tanks (LST’s). The Chief Inter- com Series is introduced with up to 50 connected stations.
1980s
Gas is expensive and full-service becomes a luxury. Cars line up at self-service gas stations and convenience stores where attendants are able to talk to their customers with hands-free Talkaphone intercoms.
1990s
With the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in July of 1990, the disabled are ensured equal access to communication. Talkaphone responds with its first hands-free ADA- compliant emergency phones.
2010s
