GLEN OAKS COMMUNITY
College (GOCC) located in Cent- reville, MI is a small rural institu- tion in southwest MI. The main building was opened in 1969, and is an example of Brutalist Architecture designed by Gunner Birkerts, one of the foremost proponents of this style. While the design and use of materi- als is now long out of style, the actual use of massive columns and beams to create expansive spaces, has to be appreciated. The Grand Concourse is an 88-foot clear span, bridge-like totally open gathering space that is driven under.
By the 2000’s, the concourse was seen only as a dreary place with raw concrete and brown block walls. All these elements made it easy to over- look the amazing vistas through the end-to-end full-length windows onto the beautiful treed campus while being seem-
ingly suspended in the air. The decision was made to invest in
a complete renovation of the space to make it contemporary and inviting. The challenge was how to cover up the original finishes in such a way to cre- ate a spectacular new space. Arkos Design of Mishawaka, IN and Fredrick’s Construction of Vicksburg, MI combined to make it possible.
