The governor’s May budget revision included $96 million to
support these actions; that amount is in addition to $160 million proposed in January’s Cap and Trade expenditure plan to support forest improvements and fire protection.
Brown also established a Forest Management Task Force to help implement the order and its accompanying Forest Carbon Plan, which was finalized May 10 after more than a year of development and public outreach.
According to his office, eight of the state’s 20 most destructive fires have occurred in the past four years.
CAL FIRE marked this year’s Wildfire Awareness Week during May 6-12.
Awards & Recognition
■ The Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association, a Section of the In-
ternational Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and National Fire Protection Association, presented several awards during its 2018 annual conference in San Antonio during May 4-10. More than 120 Metro chiefs from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States attended the conference and elected the Association’s 2018-2019 officers and board members.
Chief Daryl Osby of the Los Angeles County Fire Depart- ment was named Fire Chief of the Year, Chief Mark Light, chief executive and executive director of IAFC and former chief of the Henrico County, Va., Fire Department, received the Life- time Achievement Award. Chief David Downey of Miami-Dade County, Fla. Fire Rescue and Ken LaSala, Director of Govern- ment Relations and Policy for the IAFC both received the Presi- dent’s Award of Distinction.
The officers are: Chief Otto Drozd III, Orange County, Fla. Fire and Rescue Department, re-elected for a second one-year term as president; Chief Mike Duyck, Tualatin Valley, Ore. Fire & Rescue Department, vice president; Chief John Lane, Win- nipeg Fire and Paramedic Service, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Can- ada, secretary; and Chief Don Lombardi, West Metro, Colo. Fire Protection District, treasurer. The new board members are Chief Robert Rocha, Corpus Christi, Texas Fire Department; Chief (retired) William Bryson, Miami and Miami-Dade, Fla. Fire and Rescue Departments; and Chief Eric Tade, Denver, Colo. Fire Department.
