The council presented the Excellence Award to Schneider Na- tional, the Innovation Awards to Brigham Health Sleep Matters Initiative, and the Advocate Award to Common Ground Alliance 811 Campaign during the ceremony.
“Brigham Health, Common Ground Alliance and Schneider National have helped improve safety at home, at work and on our roadways,” said NSC President and CEO Deborah A.P. Hersman. “They share the Council’s mission to eliminate preventable deaths and make the world measurably safer. We are proud to honor them and to recognize all the outstanding finalists.”
According to an NSC survey, 43 percent of adults admit they may be too tired to function safely at work. Brigham Health Sleep Matters Initiative is designed to address sleep deficiency through its education and sleep disorders screening programs. Its program has resulted in a 50 percent decrease in injuries, disability days, and instances of moderate to severe psychological distress.
Common Ground Alliance (CGA) was established to develop a national public awareness campaign focused on the importance of calling 811 before excavating to ensure underground utility lines are not disturbed during work. Since the campaign began, dam- aged lines have decreased by 50 percent and excavation damage is no longer the leading cause of pipeline-related injury and death.
In 2012, Schneider National began implementing forward-
looking, radar-based systems to monitor vehicle distance, speed,
of them. At present, more than 95 percent of Schneider’s com- pany trucks are equipped with collision mitigation to supplement drivers’ reactions. As a result, Schneider’s rear-end collisions have dropped 68 percent and crash severity has dropped 95 percent, ac- cording to the NSC.
The nine finalists for the three award categories were selected, reviewed, and evaluated by an external panel.
NIOSH, FDA Collaborating on
N95 Regulatory Oversight
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Food and Drug Administration have agreed to collaborate in an effort to streamline regulatory oversight of N95 filtering facepiece respirators. NIOSH and FDA will be working together to help re- duce duplicative premarket processes for N95s used in health care.
FDA published a final order in the Federal Register on May 17 to exempt a subset of N95s intended to be used in health care set- tings from premarket notification requirements subject to condi- tions and limitations. Per the final order, NIOSH and FDA have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding that provides a framework for coordination and efficiency in regulatory oversight between the two agencies and outlines their mutually agreed-upon review process.
Subject to conditions and limitations, some N95s will be ex- empt from FDA premarket notification requirements, meaning
