On the Move
Ken Styron, formerly Co-
lumbia Southern Univer-
sity’s chief operating of-
ficer, began transitioning
into the position of CSU
president on May 1, 2018.
The university’s board of
trustees nominating com-
mittee voted in the ap-
pointment of Styron to replace Robert Mayes, Jr., the university’s co-founder who took the president’s office in September 2005. In his role of president, Styron will focus on execution of strategy, day-to-day operations, policies, and procedures. The ceremony for Styron’s inauguration will take place in conjunction with CSU’s 2018 commencement ceremony on Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, an event that will also honor the university’s 25th anniversary. “After much thought and prayer, I have made the deci- sion to transition from president of Colum- bia Southern University—and what better time to do it than during our 25th anniver- sary,” said Mayes, who will continue in his role of CEO of Columbia Southern Educa- tion Group, CSU’s parent company. “Dur- ing Ken’s tenure with CSU, he has proven himself time and time again. Over the years, I have seen him grow into an exceptional leader. He will be a wonderful president to our employees, and, most importantly, our students,” Mayes added. Since joining CSU in 2002, Styron has capitalized on decades of experience in information technology to propel the online university forward and has worked in levels of increasing responsi- bility, including as COO, chief of staff, chief information officer, vice president of in- structional design and technology, and di- rector of information technology. He serves on the Mobile Area Council Boy Scouts of America Board. “I am humbled and hon- ored to accept the role of president for Columbia Southern University,” said Sty- ron. “During my time at CSU, I have seen this university grow from a small public safety college in Orange Beach, Alabama, to an international university that’s helped thousands of adult learners create better lives for themselves and their families. As I embark on my presidency, I am commit- ted to continuing this mission.” Styron will be CSU’s third president. . . . MCR Safety announced in April that Larry Garner, nearing his 40th anniversary with the com-
pany, will be transitioning
into semi-retirement. “In
addition to his full plate
at MCR, Larry also serves
on the board of his church,
serves in soup kitchens,
clothes closets for the
homeless, and maintains
a personal training regime
that would be envied by people 20 years his junior!” said Mitch Lewellen, MCR Safety’s CEO. Garner will continue with the com- pany on a part-time basis, mentoring and assisting the team by continuing his partic- ipation with tradeshows, end user events, the International Glove Association (IGA), and serving on the University of Memphis Advisory Marketing Board. Effective April 1, Chris Smith became
the company’s director of
marketing. “It is a privi-
lege and honor to follow
in the footsteps of Larry,
and I look forward to the
opportunity to grow and
strengthen MCR Safety’s
brand in the marketplace,”
Smith said. He is a graduate of Middle Ten- nessee State University with a BAS degree in Aerospace and during his 15-year tenure has progressed from inside sales to outside sales, director of sales, to director of mar- keting. . . . Grainger appointed Thomas Okray senior vice president and chief financial officer, effective May 2. Okray succeeds Ron Jadin, who will retire from Grainger after 20 years with the company, including 10 as senior vice president and CFO. In addition, Joseph High has decided to retire as Grainger’s senior vice president and chief people officer. Okray has nearly 30 years of experience focusing on finance, operations, and various aspects of sup- ply chain and most recently was executive vice president and CFO for Advance Auto Parts. “We are excited to welcome Tom to Grainger,” said DG Macpherson, the com- pany’s chairman and CEO. “He brings the ideal combination of exceptional financial acumen, along with significant business experience. In addition, he has a great ap- preciation for our industry and customer base and understands the importance of a sound digital strategy.” Okray said he’s excited to join Grainger. “It’s a strong. customer-focused organization that prides itself on exceptional service and innovative solutions,” he said. “I believe the company
is focused on the right things that will drive growth and enhance customer value in new and unique ways. I look forward to work- ing with DG and the entire Grainger team to continue to implement the corporate strategy.” . . . ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, appointed Mike Gies as executive director of the ISSA Founda- tion, (www.issafoundation.org), the philan- thropic arm of the association. Since 2007, he has worked as an independent organi- zation and management consultant, help- ing clients with everything from financial analysis, strategic planning, and program implementation to brand management, leadership cultivation, and support for ma- jor fundraising campaigns. In his new role, Gies will ensure the charitable division of ISSA has a comprehensive strategy to fur- ther expand its reach and better achieve its mission of “Investing in Tomorrow.” “We are looking to take the ISSA Foundation to the next level, to make it more meaningful and expand the opportunities and benefits it offers our membership, the industry, and the communities in which we work and live,” said ISSA Executive Director John Barrett. “To do this, we need a talented, experienced leader to help us refocus our efforts. Given his obvious leadership skills and proven track record in both the profit and nonprofit arena, Mike is clearly the man for this job.” The association is head-
