INDUSTRY UPDATE
For more information about the DOT drug and alcohol testing rules and regula- tions, visit https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regu- lations/drug-alcohol-testing/overview-drug- and-alcohol-rules. The page discusses the history of the DOT testing program and resources available on the website, includ- ing answers to these common questions:
■ Who is tested?
■ Which substances are tested?
■ When does testing occur?
■ What are the testing procedures?
■ What if I fail or refuse a test?
■ What resources are available to
drivers?
EPA Issues Nanomaterials
Reporting Rule
EPA issued a final regulation Jan. 11, 2017, requiring one-time reporting and record- keeping of exposure and health and safety information on chemical substances at the nanoscale level. The information is to include the specific chemical identity, pro- duction volume, methods of manufacture
and processing, exposure and release in- formation, and existing information con- cerning environmental and health effects, “insofar as known to or reasonably ascer- tainable by the person making the report,” it states. These are chemical substances that have structures with dimensions at the nanoscale—approximately 1-100 nanome- ters (nm); a human hair is approximately 80,000 to 100,000 nanometers wide.
EPA said the information collection “is not intended to conclude that nanoscale mate- rials will cause harm to human health or the environment. Rather, EPA will use the information gathered to determine if any further action under TSCA, including ad- ditional information collection, is needed.”
Entities that manufacture or process a reportable chemical substance during the three years prior to the final effective date of the rule must report to EPA within a year of the rule’s publication. Jay West, senior director of chemical products and technol- ogy at the American Chemistry Council, said EPA made “positive” changes to its fi-
nal nanomaterials reporting rule but not all concerns were addressed sufficiently. The council is compiling a list of topics that it believes require additional explanation and will send that the agency, he said.
Awards & Recognition
■ The American Industrial Hygiene As- sociation will receive a $10,000 Innova- tion Grant this year from the American Society of Association Executives Foun- dation. The grant comes from ASAE’s In- novation Grants Program and supports the IH Professional Pathway program—a member outreach/public awareness pro- gram AIHA launched last year. The grant allows AIHA to develop more outreach materials in 2017.
AIHA will be recognized at ASAE’s 2017 Great Ideas Conference in Orlando this month and at ASAE’s 2017 Annual Meeting, which will be held Aug. 12-15 in Toronto.
