INDUSTRY UPDATE
it has doubled the size of its testing labora- tory to include a climate-controlled facil- ity with a full-sized dust collection test rig. The new equipment is dedicated to testing in accordance with ANSI/ASHRAE Stan- dard 199-2016, Method of Testing the Per- formance of Industrial Pulse Cleaned Dust Collectors, the first standard to provide a methodology for comparing performance results based on true operating conditions.
“We’ve always known that filters and dust collectors varied widely in perfor- mance, but now there’s a methodology to quantify that difference with actual perfor- mance data,” said Graeme Bell, vice presi- dent of Camfil APC Americas. “Camfil APC was proud to serve on the Standard 199 project committee since its inception to help develop the standard, and now we have a testing lab that makes it easy for dust collection equipment operators to perform the testing.” For more information, visit www.camfilapc.com.
Standards News
■ The American Society of Civil En-
gineers has published the ANSI/ASCE/ SEI 25-16 standard, Earthquake-Actuated Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices, which provides current minimum functionality requirements for earthquake-actuated au- tomatic gas shutoff devices and systems. The devices can sense seismic activity and halt the flow of gas and can be used on sys- tems carrying natural gas and propane, as well as for piping, equipment, and appli- ances typically found in structures of three stories or less. The seismic performance requirements established in the standard are based on dynamic testing of current devices and in-depth examination of data on ground motions, structural damage, fire initiation, and actuation of existing earth- quake shutoff devices. The new edition up- dates the previous Standard ANSI/ASCE/ SEI 25-06 and provides greater transpar- ency regarding the performance of these devices, according to ASCE.
Topics include:
■ An overview of applicability, opera-
tion, marking, and warranty for these devices ■ Construction issues, such as equip-
ment and data to be provided by the manu- facturer, corrosion and chemical resistance, instructions, and continued operation
■ Performance issues, including ri- gidity of mounting, deflection limits, test specimens, ruggedness, performance re- quirements, and durability
■ Definitions and references

FMCSA Starts 2017 Drug and Alcohol Information Survey
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Adminis- tration recently began alerting some truck- ing and bus companies that they are required to submit their 2016 DOT drug and alcohol testing program results within 60 days, in this case by March 15, 2017, as directed by 49 CFR 382.403. Results from the agency’s Annual Drug and Alcohol Information Survey are used to determine the random testing rates for the following year. Carriers notified by FMCSA that they have been se- lected to complete the survey are required to respond or face possible civil penalties.
