Numotion’s 2019 NLC
NFL Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith was a keynote speaker.
Donning Numotion shirts and vests on a rainy morning, attendees shov- eled, wheelbarrowed, then hand- placed the rocks into the parks’ new landscaping. They painted fences, cleaned attractions such as the wheelchair-accessible carousel and the gymnasium, pulled weeds and hauled away debris and trash.
“We have people who are servant leaders in their core,” Swinford said. “It’s why they’re with the company,
it’s why they’re part of the industry, it’s why they do what they do. Everybody in the organization, from the board
of directors to myself to every single person who attends the conference, goes out there with a genuine, authentic passion and desire to make a difference for Morgan’s Wonderland, or the grade school we were at a
year ago in Houston impacted by Hurricane Harvey. It’s hard not to feel good about the collective difference that we can all make. And people have seen it, they’ve seen the facelift that 700 or 800 people can give a place in a short amount of time.”
The previous evening, Numotion hosted a carnival night in the exhibit hall to raise funds for its newly launched non-profit foundation. Activities included exhibitor-spon- sored arcade-style games, a wheelchair basketball tournament featuring 16 Numotion teams (aided
by professional players Ryan Martin and Josh Turek), and a photo op with Numo, the 15-month-old service dog trainee sponsored by Numotion.
“The wheelchair basketball tour- nament was just out of this world in terms of the energy level, the compet- itiveness,” Swinford said. “It was our first time doing an evening expo with different adaptive competitions. I think it really allowed our manufacturing partners to interact with our team
on more of a social level, but at the same time, everybody got to see all the different technologies that various manufacturers are working on.”
North Central Total Motion won the basketball tourney, while Numo good-naturedly posed for photos all evening.
“We raised over $12,000 from employees,” Swinford said of the evening dubbed the Numotion Foundation “FUNraiser.”
Learning & Leadership
The conference provided plenty of education as well, but the sessions took many forms.
Four Numotion team members who use wheelchairs led a panel discussion: “That was a huge highlight just in terms of their candor, their transparency, and eye-opening feedback and thoughts about their challenges on a daily basis,” Swinford said. Board members fielded questions during another panel — then many stayed for the community service project, where they too pulled weeds and hauled rocks.
Attendees chose which breakout sessions they wanted to see, and session leaders got creative with their presentations. In the session on the meeting of durable medical supplies and CRT, attendees were challenged to open and prepare catheters while wearing gloves or using only one hand to simulate what challenges
Wheelchair basketball action was fierce.
