issues of access to higher education and introduce concepts of digital literacy and social change. “There are increasing opportunities to do work that has meaningful impact,” Gjest- vang said. “The slow piece is thinking about how we bring a relationship to the work that is driven by a sense of purpose and meaning. Also, it involves thinking about how we design ways of working in teams and as a community that allow us to sustain the work in ways that are healthy and that don’t burn people out.” When we operate at a breakneck pace, she explained, we lose the ability to bring passion to our work and to other things we care about.
With all the financial stresses universities are under, how- ever, how does that vision translate into the day-to-day work of academic technology staff members?
“We are stopping to make sure we are thinking not just about opportunities in front of us with technology, but about the problems we are trying to solve,” Gjestvang said. Some- times that means walking away from or taking a pause on some avenues as OSU chooses which are most important to invest in. “We came from a place of pursuing a lot of oppor- tunities at the same time,” she said. “Now we are thinking about which of those we step away from and whether there are a few things we can invest in in really meaningful ways.”
The other aspect of slow ed tech, she said, is making sure the work environment encourages people to connect with each other, and designing ways to share ideas that slow the
pace a little bit and allow for meaningful conversations.
The conversation then turned to specific projects at OSU. One is called the Affordable Learning Exchange (ALX), which includes a variety of tools, including open content repositories and digital textbooks, aimed at providing a more affordable experience for students. Nineteen ALX grant recipients are working on projects during the 2017-2018 academic year that are projected to save students between $900,000 and
$1,200,000 annually.
The ALX puts out a call for proposals. Faculty members
don’t have to have expertise in technology; they just have to express an interest in the idea. Grantees get course develop- ment help as well as stipends to support course release time. “The most important help we can provide is working with an instructional designer who can help you think about what kind of content would be most effective in your course and where you can access that content,” Gjestvang said. That might be an OpenStax textbook, something collaboratively authored, library journal content or a faculty member’s own content.
“The exciting thing is that we started this work thinking largely about cost reduction, and realized this is very much a parallel process with course transformation and building more engaging pedagogical strategies,” Gjestvang explained. “When a person comes to the table and says ‘I am willing to rethink the content I teach with,’ [that means they are] open and interested in rethinking how they teach and what kinds
of engagement strategies they can use.”
Another recent development at OSU is called the Digital
Flagship Initiative. Through a partnership with Apple, Ohio State is establishing: a student success initiative to integrate learning technology throughout the university experience; an iOS design laboratory on the Columbus campus serving faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community; and university-wide opportunities for students to learn coding skills to enhance their career-readiness in the app economy.
In this initiative, all incoming first-year students on the main campus and regional campus will get an iPad and a range of apps to support them both inside and outside the classroom, Gjestvang said. One goal is to ensure that “when we are thinking about what technology can support with students, it is not only their classroom learning — it is thinking about how we support the range of mental health challenges that students face coming out of high school and into college, as well as supporting financial literacy and financial wellness.” The focus is on an array of digital literacies and civic engagement practices. “There is a whole world of things that feel particularly important right now,” she said, “about how we design programs and have hard conversations around what kinds of skills and strategies we hope our students will bring into the world when they leave — and how we support those.”
