PROJECT OF DISTINCTION
NEW STUDENT CENTER AND CAFETERIA RENOVATION ALLEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
IOLA, KS
ALLEN COMMUNITY College is a small public institution in rural Southeast Kansas.
Established in 1923, the college began as the Iola Junior College, an extension of the Iola Public School District, and occupied the third floor of the Iola High School with an enrollment of 93 students. In 1966, Al- len County voters approved a $1,500,000 bond issue to construct the current cam- pus. The current cafeteria renovation and student center addition is the first major project since 1989.
This project—renova- tion of 10,350-square-foot cafeteria/commercial kitchen; demolition of precast arbor between buildings, and construction of new 13,050-square-foot Student Center—unites two existing buildings and provides a modern student gathering and recreation space. The project includes a new boardroom flanked by two new entry vesti- bules, remodeled cafeteria and commercial kitchen, new student commons, two new game rooms, new bookstore, new confer- ence/multipurpose room, and new quiet study rooms to accommodate group study sessions. Clerestory windows at the existing cafeteria and new student commons areas, as well as exterior glazed walls at the new game rooms, provide abundant natural lighting.
Exterior amenities include a new canopied courtyard just outside the new game rooms and a new outdoor patio adjacent to the board- room. New interior finishes feature the college’s scarlet and black school colors along with grey accents.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
This is definitely an improve- ment from what it was, interiors are clean and up-to-date. The colors and branding are well done. This facility will serve the campus community well.
