EDUCATION DESIGN SHOWCASE • COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES
PROJECT OF DISTINCTION
ST. LOUIS University’s Grand Hall is a unique multipurpose building that combines residential, aca- demics, socialization, dining, and three living and learning communities: Diversity and Global Citizenship, Engineer- ing and Innovation, and Ethi- cal Leaders in Business. Each learning community has a dedicated residential floor, specialized “learning com- mons,” and multipurpose classrooms. At night, stu- dents use these classrooms for social gatherings and group projects. A business incubator, maker space, lounges on each floor, and a community kitchen further support a variety of ways to learn and collaborate.
The “SLU blue” is used throughout the interior, with pops of coordinating orange, yellow, and green to reflect the liveliness
of the students. The SLU logo was incorporated into custom furniture, window glass, technology cabinets, and masonry. The Dining Hall features a mural of the “History of the Billikin,” the school’s mascot. Lounges, study rooms, classrooms, and conference rooms of- fer mobile furniture to be reconfigured for student needs. The extensive use of glass allows natural light to permeate classrooms and lounges with views to downtown St. Louis. The seven-story glass façade, emblazoned with the SLU logo, creates a strong visual presence.
Grand Hall achieves the university’s strategic goals of enhancing retention and recruitment and increasing and improving on-campus living.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The glass and openness to the street is attractive. Interi- ors are clean and well done; the daylight in the lounge is great. Material choices are nicely matched to function.
