New Solar Field at the
University of Maryland
This spring, the switch was flipped on a new solar field spanning 10 acres on the University of Maryland Center for Envi- ronmental Science (UMCES)’s Horn Point Laboratory campus in Cambridge, MD. The 11,000 solar panels are expected to generate the equivalent of 50 percent of the campus’ annual energy consumption.
The project is a Power Purchase Agree- ment (PPA) in which Standard Solar installs and operates the solar panels in exchange for the use of land. UMCES agrees to pur- chase the equivalent energy being generated over the next 20 years from Standard Solar.
The campus also put the final touches on a new solar canopy over a 46-space, crushed stone parking lot that will offset the cost of four level-II electrical vehicle charging sta- tions. This project is thanks to a grant from the Maryland Energy Administration.
William & Mary
Dedicates New Building
The College of William & Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) recently dedicated a new building—Davis Hall—to centralize and upgrade research and office space for people in a number of existing pro- grams. It is the first LEED-certified building on VIMS’ Gloucester Point campus.
Features that contribute to the build- ing’s LEED Gold certification include natural and high-efficiency LED lighting, low-flow toilets and sinks, a highly efficient HVAC system, architectural sunshades,
use of recycled content within building materials, tracking of recycled construc- tion waste, bike racks and environmen- tally friendly landscaping that uses native plants, and rain gardens and other tech- niques to minimize run-off and provide habitat for birds and other wildlife.
Relocating to the 32,000-square-foot facility are faculty and staff with VIMS’ Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM), Information Technology and Network Services (ITNS), Marine Advisory Services, News & Media Services, and Virginia Sea Grant. CPM

Brains. Beauty.
Choose both. Our Relay technology monitors fill level and weight, sending a spike alert that indicates unusual fill level change to help stop residential dumping and overflow. Efficiency is a beautiful thing.
