Campus Scene IN THE SPOTLIGHT
\{ CONT. FROM PAGE 3 \} Utah Valley Opens
Training Dome
Utah Valley University (UVU) recently opened the new Wolverine Training Dome, cutting the ribbon at the new in- door facility on UVU’s Vineyard campus.
The dome will be home to UVU Ath- letics for indoor training, allowing many of the teams to practice throughout the year, regardless of weather. It will also house a strength and conditioning gym for Wolverine athletics. In addition to an additional facility for intramurals, UVU club sports—such as lacrosse and rugby—will also benefit from the dome.
The dome covers one of UVU’s Gene- va Fields with an overall area of 100,163 square feet and is 72 feet tall. The walls of the dome are just over 2 feet wide
by nearly 7 feet deep around the entire perimeter, which is unlike typical design on a standard construction building.
Construction took approximately seven months to complete.
Lehigh Announces New
Research Institutes
Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, has announced the formation of three Interdisciplinary Research Institutes (IRIs): The Institute for Functional Materials and Devices; the Institute for Data, Intelligent Systems, and Computa- tion; and the Institute for Cyber-Physical Infrastructure and Energy.
Lehigh’s IRIs will create communi- ties of scholars and will catalyze crucial research in areas in which Lehigh can take a leading position on the national and international stage and make lasting societal contributions.
These Institutes will be supported by a portion of Lehigh’s commitment of more than $150 million toward interdisciplinary research and education with investments focused on faculty and student talent, new research, and academic programs that col- laborate across colleges, and the expansion of facilities dedicated to interdisciplinary

Planning for Evacuation
WHEN IT COMES TO EVACUATING FACILITIES
in the event of an emergency we need to be prepared for any eventuality in order to get everyone out safely. That is why emergency evacuation plans are vital. Extra precautions and considerations need to be taken in order to accommodate the individual needs of students, staff, and visitors with physical or sensory dis- abilities, and those who may lack understanding of a situation or the ability to act quickly.
Identifying and preventing risk is a crucial part of emergency planning and should never allow leaving anyone behind because they are differently abled. Pre-planning for an emer- gency is imperative. Campuses must have the capacity to move all persons with disabilities to a safe location immediately in any emergency.
Points to consider when planning:
• Clearly visible evacuation procedures
• Consider mobility-impaired and persons
with sight/hearing impairment
• Staff training in use of assistive equipment
and procedures
• Regular reviews, especially if the building
has in any way been modified
• Visitors will often be unfamiliar with the
layout of your premises
• Visitors share their needs upon entry
Develop a plan to necessitate provisions and share the information with all people concerned. Campus administration has a moral, ethical, and legal responsibility to keep their whole com- munity safe in the event of an emergency.
Evacuation chairs provide a universal evacuation solution for smooth stairway de- scent during an emergency. Evacuation sleds are designed to help evacuate non-ambulant people or people who may not be able to walk down stairs in an emergency.
