The FCC’s recommended speeds for internet access for schools are general targets, but actual needs depend on scale of digital learning initiatives and usage data.

AS SCHOOLS CONTINUE to ramp up the number of devices per student and expand use of digital content and online assessments, broadband needs are expected to grow by 50 percent to 60 percent year over year for the foreseeable future, according to EducationSuperHighway and the Consortium
for School Networking (CoSN). To help school districts prepare for future connectivity needs, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and State Education Technology Directors Association (SETDA) have both set out broadband targets for schools, but there is some disagreement among district technology administrators over how fast is fast enough.
