EDUCATION DESIGN SHOWCASE • HIGH SCHOOL
HONORABLE MENTION
FRANK J. GARGIULO CAMPUS HUDSON COUNTY SCHOOLS OF TECHNOLOGY
SECAUCUS, N.J.
AN ICON FOR educational and sustainable design, the Frank J. Gargiulo Campus in Secaucus, N.J., welcomed students for the first time in September 2018.
Equipped with unri- valed elements designed
to advance the career-prep curriculum of the Hudson County Schools of Technol- ogy, the building serves more than 1,200 students in its 350,000-square-foot facility set on 20 acres. The campus is home to High Tech High School, KAS Prep, and Hudson Technical.
More than 70 sophisti- cated learning spaces and progressive features provide dedicated space for each
of the school’s academies: Culinary Arts, Design & Fab- rication, Applied & Environ- mental Science, and Visual/ Tech & Performing Arts.
The building also doubles as a teaching tool, seen through design and pro- gramming elements such as exposed building infrastruc- ture, a hydroponic garden, advanced theatre spaces, and sophisticated broadcast- ing and production studios, among many others.
Architectural elements, such as a curved exterior wall and a multi-level, sky-lit atrium provide an attrac- tive learning environment, designed appropriately to reflect the advanced edu- cational programs that are housed within the building.
The vocational-technical high school, anticipated to receive LEED Gold certifica- tion, is an icon for sustain- ability, equipped with wind turbines, geothermal heat- ing, 27,000 square feet of so- lar panels and 20,000 square feet of green roofs.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
The school was built to address the local needs. Nice sustain- able project with attention paid to environmental concerns like noise, acoustics, etc. Good use of transparency in the inside and outside designs.
