SMBSD Breaks Ground
on New Elementary School
In February, the Santa Maria-Bonita School District broke ground on a new elementary school located in the south east section of the city. This will be the district’s 17th elementary school, 21st school overall, and will help the district keep pace with growth in the commu- nity. A name has not yet been selected for this K-6 school. A formal naming process will take place while the school is being built. The el- ementary school is expected to take a year and a half to build. It will open in August 2020 and can house up to 900 kindergarten-through- 6th-grade students. The campus was designed by the national DLR group architecture firm.
New Avon Grove High School Includes Flexible, Collaborative Spaces
Located in southern Chester County Pennsylvania, Avon Grove is a rapidly growing community. While well maintained, the exist- ing secondary school buildings have opera- tional challenges, are incapable of accommo- dating projected enrollment growth, and are unsuited to the district’s innovative, student- directed academic program. The capital plan features the construction of a new high school and conversion of the former high school into a middle school. The facility will initially
house 1,750 students in grades 9 through 12 with the capability to easily expand
in the future to accommodate 2,200. The program of the new high school includes a multitude of flexible, collaborative, and project-based spaces. Once high school students have relocated to the new build- ing, the current high school will be reno- vated and converted into a middle school. KCBA has been selected as the architect for the district’s facilities program.

The school will include four small learning communities, gymnasiums, cafeteria, auditorium, and media center, among many of its state-of- the-art amenities. Construction activities are scheduled to begin this spring, and the new school is scheduled to open to students in September of 2021.
Construction on Another New School in Chesterfield Breaks Ground
Chesterfield County (Va.) Schools broke ground on a new school in the Mato- aca District. It’s the seventh such ground- breaking of a new elementary school in the past two years. The new school is replacing one that is over 80 years old. It’s being built on the same site as the Matoaca Middle School west Campus. Besides the previous seven elementary schools, four more are on the docket to be built in the coming year. The new Matoaca Elementary school is scheduled to house over 700 students and open in Fall of 2020. SPM
