HEALTHY FACILITIES
SPECIAL SECTION
THE 2018 WINNERS−HEALTHY FACILITIES RECOGNITION
THE HEALTHY FACILITIES AWARD PROGRAM—a collaboration between School Planning & Management magazine, College Planning & Management
magazine, and the Healthy Facilities Institute (HFI)—is in its second year thanks to schools and colleges across the nation striving for a higher standard of health stewardship in learning spaces, and who are willing to share what’s working with their peers. Entries are evaluated based on guidance in the Healthy and Safe Facility Handbook, School and College Edition (PDF and online versions that can be found at www.healthyfacilityhandbook.com), through follow- up interviews, and with input from HFI’s advisory group.
The award recognizes schools that give regular,
consistent attention to nine basic health factors: 1. Indoor Air Quality
2. Chemical Exposure
3. Water Quality
4. Sound Levels
5. Lighting
6. Cleaning, Disinfecting
7. Sanitizing and Foodservice
8. Integrated Pest Management
9. Body Matters (musculoskeletal, strains, slips/falls)
Schools recognized this year range from very small to very large.
All face challenges, but all are progressive, and are meeting obstacles head-on with action, as shown in the bulleted highlights below. Congratulations!
