Combined with H.265 compression, band- width efficiency can be improved by up to 75 percent compared to current H.264 technology.
“We share our video surveillance and security bandwidth with our Point of Sale system and we don’t ever want to take away from the bandwidth of POS trans- actions or impact the speed at which they go through,” Charlton said. “Hanwha’s Wisestream compression technology fits our business model and along with Sa- lient helps preserve and efficiently man- age bandwidth. It’s really helpful to have a camera that’s smart enough to be able to tweak and regulate
itself.”

Moving to IP Security Solutions
By Ralph C. Jensen
Is it possible that there are still analog cameras toiling in the security world? Well, yes, many analog cameras are working, and with the help of a VMS provider, they can con- tinue to work as intended until the time comes for a replacement IP unit.
Grant Cowan, the director of national accounts at Salient Systems, participated in a product and technology shoot-out as Kirkland’s Home Décor sought to refresh their existing analog camera system and replace cameras to IP.
“Kirkland’s has more than 400 stores nationwide, and as they remodel a store, they replace the cameras,” Cowan said. “Cameras all have licenses, but as they use our soft- ware (VMS) and eventually trade out cameras, our licenses will auto-convert. This is a huge cost-savings for the end-user.”
The Salient solution will replace currently used encoders. Once the company makes a transition with the software, the analog cards are pulled from the system, and IP image quality appears. For the Kirkland’s team in Nashville, the transition over to the Salient sys- tem provides more dynamic resolution scaling for more accessible remote video investiga- tions. That’s a big deal when watching over so many retail outlets.
Of the 400-plus stores, Salient and Hanwha, the camera of choice, are about 60 percent converted. Kirkland’s is currently refreshing and replacing about 60 stores per year, and in the fifth year of conversion.
