Diverse Security Solutions Create Safer Campuses
By Sydny Shepard
We take a lot of things for granted in our everyday lives, includ- ing the ability to see, hear and immediately react to an emergency situation. For some, a lack of inclusive security solutions could lead to chaos and precious moments lost in the event of an incident on campus.
The issue of delivering time-sensitive information to audiences who may not be able to understand routine communication formats is addressed by Jerry Geis, the president of Layered Solutions, in our cover story. He describes the security measures implemented by the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind (CSBD) that help students on campus feel empowered and informed.
One of the biggest challenges faced by the school was relaying information to students who might not be able to hear an announce- ment come over the loud speakers. Leaders at CSBD decided to install flat screen TVs around the school they could stream a person giving the instructions in sign language.
When you look into building up security solutions on your cam- pus, be aware of the different types of needs the students, faculty and staff might have. Being able to deploy information quickly is a huge plus to shaving off precious seconds of response time to a campus, but the ability to deploy that message in various formats that can reach even more people could help to save lives.
