At any time during this process, state regulators can enter a facility with handheld RFID readers. They check all the product in each room and compare it with the facility’s database. If the database lists a plant as currently in the vegetation room and it’s not, the facility is fined. If a regulator finds the missing plant in another room, the facility is fined again. If the grower is found to be “out of compliance” enough times, their cultivation license could be at risk.
TECHNOLOGY TO THE RESCUE
March Networks®,a global provider of intelligent video solutions, delivers an enhanced tracking and security solution to the cannabis industry to help ensure seed-to-sale compliance. The solution combines video from high-resolution IP cameras with data from RFID-tagged plants and packages,
Once installed, this seed-to-sale tracking system can be used as a preventative measure to monitor plant locations and to correct any employee behavior that puts the grower at risk. The link to video allows owners to pinpoint how and when a procedure or policy is not being followed. The video can also serve as evidence to prove that an operator is following procedure if they are ever incorrectly fined.
NOT JUST FOR CANNABIS
Mr. Corrall points out that the Searchlight solution offers benefits to a variety of businesses. “Any retail business can benefit from Searchlight because it provides immediate access to video, showing you what happened and when. Retailers outside of the cannabis industry use it for loss prevention,
enabling operators to seamlessly track and visually verify inventory as it moves within cultivation and on to dispensaries.
“The beauty of our SearchlightTM for Retail software is that it ties the various control points directly to video. In this case, the growers can not only find out where each plant is, they have video documentation as to how it got there,” explains Jeff Corrall, Strategic Partnerships & Integrations, March Networks.

operations, compliance, and other applications. Banks also use it to proactively detect incidents such as the installation of an illegal skimming device in an ATM, or to assess how long customers are waiting in line for teller service. For its ingenuity, the Searchlight- RFID solution won an award at ISC West for loss prevention and article surveillance.
It seems whether you live in a state where cannabis is legal or not, there’s one thing we all can agree upon: nobody likes to get fined. And whenever there is technology that can help avoid fines, there’ll always be opportunity.
In addition, the March Networks
Searchlight solution provides
producers and dispensary owners with real-time and historical views into their operations via a mobile device or workstation, enabling them to conduct remote audits and identify areas for improvement. It also offers video analytics and point-of-sale (POS) transaction integration presented in customizable reports to help dispensary owners quickly detect and review suspect transactions, analyze performance trends, improve customer service, and gain other business insights.
