reliable and predictable power systems pro- vide greater efficiencies and yield substantial cost savings for customers and integrators.
Modern power systems provide these ca- pabilities:
• The ability to access real-time data and detect historical trends, with 100 percent visibility into the system, globally or lo- cally, or to each connected device.
• The ability to identify and prevent poten- tial power problems to critical security systems before they fail.
• Powerful analytics that deliver informa- tion in a highly intuitive form that helps security integrators manage systems to a healthy, optimal performance.
• An integrated solution that combines access control hardware with intelligent power networking capabilities in a single enclosure to reduce installation time and yield easy standardization across enter- prise specifications and from installation to installation.
• Proactive real-time reporting and the con- tinual delivery of mission critical informa- tion on the overall system health and vi- ability, leading to less downtime or failure.
KEY DATES IN POWER DEVELOPMENT
1970s - 1980s: Advent of linear power supplies, which were inefficient, gener- ated heat and produced dirty power. These supplies were characterized by low capability during standby condition and higher capability to deal with short- term, high power operation by utilizing a connected battery set.
1980s - 1990s: Low-voltage switch- ing mode supplies came on the scene but were inefficient and their low fre- quency caused interference problems. These devices had a medium current capability and produced 1-4 amps of power during standby, utilizing the bat- tery for alarm conditions.
1990s - 2000: Low-voltage switch- ing mode supplies were still being used by the time early offline switching sup- plies were developing—offering greater efficiency, less heat and better overall operation. Power supplies begin their transition from simple supplies to total systems and from an operational ap- proach of standby and alarm only to full operational capability.
2009 - Present: Primarily offline switching supplies are in use, with high efficiency, solid operation, greater fea- ture sets, networkability and proactive power management.
