Today’s access control systems are allowing campuses to do more than simply granting access: they’re integrating with other network- based platforms to add more value to their capital investments. While the safety and security of the students and
staff is top of mind when campuses look to
access control systems, they can also use the data
obtained to address a myriad of efficiency
aspects and in turn gain increased intelligence
and save on expenses.

INTEGRATING DATA AND ACCESS AT RIPON COLLEGE
Spanning more than 250 acres, with 26 buildings, Ripon College in Ripon, Wis., is home to more than 840 undergraduates. Ripon faced several challenges, including outdated and unsupported access software, poorly supported controllers and readers, and an ID card system that was tied to outdated dining software.
Ripon College worked with integrator LaForce Inc. to install the Vanderbilt Security Management Systems (SMS), which is a scalable solution that allows Ripon to seamlessly add readers and monitoring solutions to the system as they grow over time without costly add-ons.
More importantly, the SMS solution helps school officials streamline access for events and is tied to the school’s event management software. Once an event is scheduled within the SMS system, the doors will automatically unlock for an event and then relock once the event is over, ensuring access can be grant- ed when it’s needed.
Additionally, the SMS system allows Ripon College the critical ability to lock down the campus, which was integral to the func- tions of the school’s security team. The school’s previous system did not offer this functionality consistently. The Vanderbilt SMS schedules doors based on different events or business rules but also contains the necessary manual and automatic overrides that are critical to ensuring the safety and security of students.

Additionally, this data can allow for the doors to be automatically unlocked for an event and relocked afterward, such as when a profes- sor holds a late study session for students in a specific class. With just a bit of information, administrators managing a building can cre- ate “rules” for an entire list of students that will grant them access to a classroom or lecture hall for a specific time period.
Analytics. Data gathered from disparate systems, such as access points, building management systems and human resources software platforms, can be combined into a single platform to give officials a more comprehensive view of the campus landscape. Today’s higher education facilities are exploring additional ways to mine this data from disparate systems to provide insight into how students are using a particular building, classroom or area of the university. This data can help analyze traffic flow patterns that can streamline better cam- pus-wide planning and operations.
Officials also look toward these analytics to help pinpoint problems before they arise, which can help thwart potential threats to the safety and security of faculty and students.
