Attacks Abound, Officers Afoot
At the time of writing this, numerous at- tacks have happened in the U.S., and Europe, and even a bombing took place at a kindergarten in China.
I was recently in Europe, enjoying a vacation dividing my time between London and Paris. On the first Saturday I was in London, there was a terrorist attack at the London Bridge and sur-
rounding areas—a place I had been to only a few hours prior to the attack. Seven people were killed and 48 were injured as a result of three men driving a van into a crowd and stabbing random people after exiting the van. Officers were on the scene and suspects were down within 8 minutes. This attack happened just weeks after the Manchester bombing took place.
Not long after I’d been home, a shooter opened fire on a congres- sional baseball practice. Unlike the UK attack, the gunman was a 66-year-old from Belleville, Illinois. He was reportedly “anti-Trump.” Though more information has yet to be released, no fatalities have been reported, and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the hip. Two U.S. Capi- tal Officers were the first to respond and shot the suspect even after being hit by gunshots themselves; both officers are in good condition and are expected to make full recoveries.
As for China, it is heartbreaking to say it was a bombing outside of a kindergarten where kids were being picked up from school. Re- ports say 7 people have been killed and 59 injured.
Although it is easy to say things are bad in the world, it’s a com- fort to know that there are police officers always at the ready to put their life on the line for yours. Without them, I don’t want to think how truly terrible our world would be.

The Access Control Dilemma – Balancing Security, Convenience and Budget
By Gordon Holmes
Physical access control has long been a key element of many facilities’ security strategies. Noticeably the technology behind access control has continuously evolved, creating solutions that offer more security and convenience than ever before. Choosing an access control system depends on the end user’s differing needs and requirements. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, the goal is to balance security and convenience for each facility, while complying with prevailing build- ing and life safety codes and meeting budget considerations.
