AN IMPRESSIVE LINEUP
By Lindsay Page
FOR OUR JULY ISSUE, I’M PLEASED TO SAY WE HAVE A GREAT VARIETY OF INTERESTING AND UNIQUE STORIES. OUR COVER STORY DISCUSSES HOW POLICIES AND PROCEDURES IN PLACE AT K-12 SCHOOLS CAN PRE- VENT POTENTIAL OFFENDERS FROM EVER GETTING ON CAMPUS. HAVING A SOLID PLAN ACTS AS A DETERRENT FOR THOSE WHO MIGHT HAVE MALICIOUS INTENTS, BUT THE DESIGN CAN ALSO HAVE A KEY ROLE IN PREVEN- TION. THIS STORY SHINES SOME MUCH NEEDED LIGHT ON HOW SCHOOLS CAN SUCCESSFULLY PROTECT EVERYONE ON CAMPUS.
Another story I’d like to bring to your attention is one written by Anthony Greiter, who is the community outreach specialist for the Iowa State University Police Department. This police department came to our attention by their impressive Twitter account. By using humor and other tactics to engage with their community, they have reached more than 20,000 followers. By having such a large presence on social media, the agency can use this point of contact as a way to further enhance the security and safety of those who are on campus day in and day out. By being such an approachable campus police department, it can make students and even staff members of the college feel more at

ease if they do need to report something. It’s really all about being a constant presence and support for the community they serve, and social media has been a great way for them to do so.
You’ll also see a story about emergency services written by Mark J. Fletcher. It discusses how the digital evolution has drastically changed the way emergency notifications are made and received. He also explains how Uber can easily find the location of someone needing a ride but 911 can’t always find the exact spot where help may be needed. With cell phones being the primary point of contact for people in the U.S., emergency services are “only going to get safer.”
And, that’s exactly what we need.
