Safety in Schools
At the time of writing this, there was a shooting at North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino, Calif. This time, a teacher who was working at the school was the target and victim. The shooter was her estranged husband. Even more tragic is the fact that two children were injured as a result of the gunfire. One of those kids died from injuries. Of
course gun control comes to mind, and people questioned how the man got into the building. It’s as simple as he signed in and did ev- erything a visitor would do on any other typical day. Plus, he was a teacher’s husband and some of the staff members recognized him. No one would’ve dreamed he’d shoot his wife and then turn the gun on himself. Yes, gun control comes to my mind, but campus security and domestic violence does as well. All schools are working diligently to protect those who are on the campus, but there is no easy fix. And with domestic violence, we should never turn a blind eye or shrug off the severity of the situation. Violence is everywhere, and like any threat, we need to work together to help one another—especially when it comes to safety in our schools.

How to Operationalize Security with Enterprise-Wide Engagement
By Steven Minsky
Security in the modern business environment—when executed cor- rectly—is the sum of two parts. It requires analysis of external cyber threats, which helps identify and design the best defenses, but also a high level of operational transparency within your organization. Without that transparency, your security team can’t engage the neces- sary parties, and it becomes impossible to make sure everyone is ad- hering to your cybersecurity standards. Organizations that first turn to specialized cybersecurity tools and services are surprisingly not as prepared as they should be. No matter how well-defended a castle’s front gate is, occupants are still vulnerable if other points of entry aren’t covered with a guard shift.
Signal Boosters and SmartSecurity Devices
By Liz Nanney
Smart devices are everywhere, and the growing market for smart homes tethered to smart devices, and thus home security systems, is developing quickly. Even in one of the more recent iPhone iOs up- dates, “Home” was added so that the user can manage their smart home when they’re away. Locking your home doors remotely from an
app is one of the many ways in which the Internet of Things is mak- ing our lives more secure and safe. One of the main outgrowths of this technology—smart homes with monitoring apps, help us protect our businesses, valuables, and of course our loved ones.
