Where’s the Privacy?
It seems like the one thing in the news, but can never be fully attained, is pri- vacy. From Smart TVs being able to re- cord conversations, WikiLeaks and the CIA, and Trump’s wiretapping accusations against Obama, it’s difficult to see how we can ever have our privacy back in full capacity. Wheth- er we’re relaxing in our backyard or running
an errand, surveillance is catching our every move. For security mostly, but still, it’s quite unnerving. And online privacy is a whole other issue. Two of our most recent Online Exclusives discuss online fraud and cybersecurity. Brett Hansen writes that “there is no silver lining for cybersecurity” and we must “educate ourselves” to have any defense in the realm of cyber space. An- other article by Michael Lynch discusses how online transactions have increased with the EMV chip cards—but online fraud also had a significant rise. Both of these articles provide much needed insight in protecting your online privacy, and I think you’ll enjoy reading them.

Ransomware Rundown: What Businesses Need to Know
By Brett Hansen
Today as the cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve at break- neck speed, so do the threats, and the amount of data we have sitting with the different organizations we deal with is growing each day. At this point, we all need to be aware of cybersecurity and the steps we need to take to safeguard ourselves and our most important informa- tion because there is no silver bullet for cybersecurity: the best line of defense is to educate ourselves.
Enter: ransomware. Five years ago when we talked about cyber- attacks, it’s likely we were talking about banking trojans that would steal your passwords and credit card numbers than anything else. To- day, if your mobile or desktop computer becomes infected, what gets installed is most likely ransomware.
Stopping the Post-EMV Surge in Online Fraud
By Michael Lynch
The predicted increase in online fraud in the U.S. has arrived with the adoption of chip card technology (also known as EMV).
According to data from ACI Worldwide, while online transac- tions grew in the U.S. by 12 percent, there was a 43 percent increase in online fraud. This spike has been expected, given what was seen in
the countries that have already implemented EMV. They experienced a significant reduction in counterfeit card fraud, while online fraud spiked dramatically.
