Walls, Walls, Everywhere
Will things ever be how they once were? When you could go visit an- other country or a famous tourist attraction without having barricades, walls, or “aesthetic perimeters” (as deputy mayor Jean-François Martins said recently at a Paris press conference) to worry about. The United States may soon be building a wall across our
entire southern border, much to Trump’s satisfaction and others dismay. And now there may be a protective barrier built around the Eiffel Tower. Terrorism and the safety and security of every- one are of utmost importance, but I think we should be able to come up with better solutions. What about better surveillance, more training for security guards, and I’m sure there are more ways to detect treats that could be used. By building walls and barriers, you take away from the experience. When I see the Eiffel Tower, I want to be in awe of its presence, not to be made aware of the threats that might be lingering in the dark. In my opin- ion, barriers can create fear and intimidation. I don’t think that should be anyone’s goal—government or not.

Lawmaker Calls for Annual School Security Drills
Unfortunately, it is hard to go a full school year without hearing of at least one violent crime on a school’s campus. That’s why Pennsylva- nia Rep. Gary Day is sponsoring legislation requiring school districts to conduct an annual school security drill in every public school that would arm students and teachers with information about what to do in an emergency situation.
The drills are intended to serve as a reminder about what to do in a situation that goes beyond a fire drill or natural disaster and includes information for events such as a terrorist act, an armed in- truder or some other violent threat.
House Report Criticizes Security Gaps at Airports
A report written by the House Homeland Security Subcommit- tee says that the systems in place to vet the nearly one million people who work within U.S. airports are insufficient. The re- port, obtained by CNN, found inconsistent screening of airport employees, insufficient TSA access to intelligence information used to vet individuals and inadequate control of access to sensitive areas of airports. Several headlines were cited from media reports that covered times people with security clear- ances smuggled guns or drugs into airports, or were associated
with militant groups like ISIS. It also highlighted a number of specific cases where the government said dozens of employees had incomplete records.
