When making the jump to a new access control system, it’s important to evaluate the companion secure issuance system that will be used to produce the ID cards. Large organizations issue a staggering amount of ID cards every year.
Organizations generally choose from two major technology categories for print- ing and encoding cards: high definition printing (HDP) retransfer technology, and direct-to-card (DTC) technology. Ideally, a solution should also support both cen- tralized and distributed issuance models, by combining the high-volume reliability and advanced credentialing features of larger centralized printers with the lower cost and smaller footprint of a distributed printing model.
There are other important secure issu- ance considerations, particularly in the ar- eas of energy consumption, overall waste, and cost efficiency. The latest secure issu- ance systems are significantly more sustain- able than in the past. Two key developments include “wasteless” lamination, and reduc- ing carbon footprints as defined through the GreenCircle certification program.
With wasteless lamination, the lamina- tion patches that are applied to cards for increased durability are attached to one another in a continuous stream of mate- rial on a single roll. This has proven to be very cost effective, reducing lamination consumables costs as much as 50 percent while maintaining the highest levels of se- curity and durability.
GreenCircle certification recognizes the energy savings that are achievable through advancements in card lamination technologies that have reduced the signifi- cant energy required to heat up and main- tain optimal operating temperature. These technologies can conserve significant amounts of energy while also saving time.
By taking advantage of these 10 com- mon triggers for transition and imple- menting a more sustainable approach to secure issuance, organizations can eas- ily and inexpensively expand and upgrade their systems to meet changing needs, take advantage of new technologies and capa- bilities, and produce ID cards in a more environmentally responsible manner.
