THE RENOVATED HIGH POINT SCHOOL serves approximately 70 special needs students from each of the WISD’s nine local school districts. Comprised of 32 classrooms, there are now six additional rooms in one wing to accommodate future program growth. The building in- cludes 118,000 SF of new space and over 12,000 SF of renovated space, including the pool and gymnasium.
To support attending students, many design elements are unique and accessible. This in- cludes oversized, automatic doors and wide corridors for easier traffic flow. Even parking con- siders spaces for student equipment. Added canopies for drop-offs and buses allow students to exit vehicles with relief from rain and snow.
Programmatic upgrades include access to outdoor learning, which is provided through canopies, a pavilion, paved paths around the entire campus, and a patio in front of the media center. New spaces designed for the social-emotional needs of students include interiors de- signed to prevent triggers with quiet rooms where students can decompress, updated acoustics in classrooms to reduce noises, and subtle, strategic colors. Two gross motor rooms have been equipped so students can get up and out of apparatus with chairs and swings.
Now an equitable space, all students have access to mainstreamed classes.
