EDITOR'S NOTE
ANOTHER SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS
BY THE TIME THIS ISSUE HITS SHELVES, we’ll be well into the 2022–2023 academic year. Students, teachers and staff at K–12 schools and higher education institutions have found their rhythms for the year (or at least the semester) and are plugging along. I’d ven- ture to guess that the long-sought “return to normalcy” has lost its novelty, and it no longer feels like the light at the end of the tunnel or a hard-won goal. By now, normal is just...normal.
However, that doesn’t mean we’ve gone in a circle and ended
up right back where we were before the pandemic. Enough time
has passed that we’re starting to implement some of the lessons and strategies we’ve used during the pandemic. Hybrid learning has become the new standard at some colleges and universities, and we’re beginning to work out the nitty-gritty details of how to make that work. Some universities are beginning to build “hybrid learning” spaces so that students can attend virtual lectures on campus. What do students want out of those spaces? What kind of furniture, seat- ing, placement works best? These are the questions we’re beginning to tackle and solve.
More importantly, younger students especially have been through a traumatic couple of years, and school districts and teachers are starting to focus on some of resulting social and emotional issues. How can teachers manage student behavior and help them learn in a way that works for them (that is, for the students), when this might be the first time that they’ve ever had to sit still at a desk and pay attention for seven hours a day?
Finally, in this issue, we’re highlighting the winners of our two major 2022 awards programs—New Product of the Year and the Ed- ucation Design Showcase. Our New Product winners represent a daz- zling array of products designed and built to meet the most current needs of students and educators alike, in categories from Building In- teriors to Outdoor Furniture to Restrooms & Locker Rooms to Safety & Security. Likewise, our Education Design Showcase highlights the past year’s best, most innovative new constructions and renovations at K–12 and Higher Ed institutions both.
