HONORABLE MENTION
RODRIGUEZ ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SAN MARCOS CONSOLIDATED INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
SAN MARCOS, TX
PERKINS AND WILL’S
concept for Rodriguez Elemen- tary School was based around two central components: Rei- magine planning to encompass student-centered learning, and design a space that serves as a community hub in a fast-growth school district. Designed to help contribute to the success of future generations of students, the school services up to 660 students, providing them with learning spaces to facilitate project-based education and exploration.
To incorporate functional circulation paths for students and visitors along an unusual topography, the school’s main entrance is on the second floor, situating the youngest student classrooms at the top, with upper grades on the lower level, along with the science and art classrooms. A dual-level library and media center functions as the heart of the facility and connects two courtyards with
a monumental staircase that allows students to flow freely.
Collaborative learning pods serve as co-teaching spaces with options for open and closed classrooms, small and medium group learning spaces, and flexible learning environments. The design of each classroom and learning pod represents a custom solution to the school district’s forward-thinking ap- proach to project-based educa- tion. These classroom learning pods and common spaces open to the split-level outdoor court- yard encouraging both learning and play.
