Every stakeholder within must be part of that culture in order for it to truly be holistic and successful. That means safety culture hinges on involved employees; team members must feel and function like they’re part of it. How do you attain that level of involvement? Through real empowerment. Executive management, line management and safety managers all need to give employees an appropriate level of input and control when it comes to shaping their own safety culture, practices and approaches. That is a point that reverberates throughout this issue. On page 26, you can learn about how regularly touring the workplace and talking to employees can create a successful training program for avoiding slips, trips and falls. On page 28, you can read how team members can save lives through CPR, AED and first aid education. On page 30, you can read about the importance of training everyone working on cold winter job sites to recognize the signs of cold stress, as well as why they should have input in their gear selection. The above examples represent one small slice of this issue, but that theme of empowerment runs throughout this issue. And that wasn’t by design, either. Rather it’s a common thread that this issue’s contributors organically touched upon — talk about a pervasive culture! Welcome to the Team Speaking of empowered team members, we have a new member of the OH&S editorial team: Robert Yaniz Jr. Robert joined our team as OH&S’s Content Editor in late July and brings with him a diverse background in business media and marketing. Robert heads up our online coverage and website editorial and has even contributed some stories to this issue, which marks his first print edition on the team. (See pages 40, 44 and 46.) Additionally, Robert also runs our social media channels, including our brand- new Threads account (find us there and Instagram at @occhealthsafety). Welcome, Robert! Robert is replacing Alexandria Saurman, who I am excited to announce has been promoted to the Client Services department within our parent company, 1105 Media, where I know she’ll accomplish big things. It’s been my absolute pleasure working with Alex since I joined OH&S in January. Over that short period, Alex kept the OH&S website humming in fifth gear, delivering top-tier safety news and features, and she super-sized our social media presence, with our LinkedIn account surpassing 119,000 followers as this issue goes to press. Thanks for all your contributions, Alex! Robert and Alex both prove what empowered team members can help accomplish for a shared mission. Giving people ownership and control over their work creates a culture of success — whether you’re publishing a magazine or keeping people safe. a a t te e s sa ap p e e r rv va as si iv ve ec cu ul l t t u ur r e eo of fs s a af fe et ty y . .
