this year—it’s still ranked number one.
In 2020, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 49,250 incidents of nonfatal falls to a lower level.18 According to OSHA, employers can make sure all holes are guarded, to use guard rails and toe-boards for an “elevated open sided platform, floor or runway” and when there is a hazard for falling in or on a machine or equipment and to use safety equipment like a “safety harness and line, safety nets, stair railings
and hand rails.”19
In addition, the agency “requires
employers to:
■ Provide working conditions that are
free of known dangers.
■ Keep floors in work areas in a clean
and, so far as possible, a dry condition.
■ Select and provide required personal protective equipment at no cost
to workers.
■ Train workers about job hazards in a
language that they can understand.”20
In a press release, NSC president and CEO Lorraine Martin said, “Despite advancements in workplace safety, we
continue to see the same types of violations each year. It’s more important than ever employers seek education and resources to keep their workers safe.”21
