Any business, no matter the size of their organization, has goals they need to meet. ThThey have some goals that are small, but they also have large, lofty goals that could take months or even years to reach. When
it comes to objectives like these, where progress is in the one percent range each day, you need to have systems in place to track growth.
The systems that I’m referring to are often called key performance indicators, or KPIs. In the safety and health world, there are many different performance indicators that a company could use to ensure they are thoughtfully and effectively tracking progress towards a safety outcome.
SPIs, or safety performance indicators, are performance
indicators that serve as metrics for specific company efforts
in health and safety. Tracking these metrics allows for a business to determine how safe the work environment is for employees and whether the company is within regulatory compliance. Oftentimes, tracking these key performance indicators helps companies determine which safety standards they are already meeting, and which standards they might need to allocate more resources toward achieving.
There are several safety performance indicators that you may choose to monitor and track. These are often split into two different categories: lagging and leading indicators. OSHA recommends using leading indicators to improve organizational performance in a variety of ways, but most importantly they play a vital role in preventing worker fatalities, injuries and illnesses by strengthening other safety and health outcomes in the workplace.
Leading indicators are proactive, preventative and predictive measures that provide information about the effective performance of your safety and health activities. In contrast to lagging indicators, which measure the occurrence and the frequency of events that occurred in the past, leading indicators measure events leading up to the incident that could reveal potential problems in your safety and health program.
A good safety management program is going to include both leading and lagging indicators to help gain insights into a workplace’s safety and health. There is no catch all solution that works for every company, but by looking at your situation, the problems you face and the goals you have set, you will be able to form a basis for making decisions about indicators and the health and safety of your workplace.
