After training employees on how to properly prepare and use sanitization products, it is important to also create a spill preparedness plan and train employees on how to safely and effectively clean up a spill of cleaning and sanitizing products. Having spill kits available for use throughout the facility, as well as on cleaning and sanitation carts, will make spill response quick and effective. Spill kits contents may vary depending on the specific need of the organization; however, chemically compatible absorbent mats and socks should be a staple of all spill kits to quickly and easily absorb small spills from buckets and spray bottles.
When responding to a spill, follow these steps to ensure the spill is safely and properly cleaned up:
■ Assess the Risk: Determine the risks that may affect human health, the environment and property before beginning the cleanup process. Identify the spilled material, determine the volume on the spill and use the container label, SDS or spill plans to identify primary dangers to workers, responders and the environment.
■ Select the Appropriate PPE: Consult the appropriate SDS and literature from the chemical manufacturer to be sure appropriate PPE is being worn. If you are unsure of the danger, always assume the worst-case scenario and use the highest level of protection.
■ Confine the Spill: Limit the area by blocking, diverting or confining the spill. Use contained absorbents such as socks, booms and absorbent mat pads to confine the spill. Nonabsorbent berms can also be used to minimize the spill area.
■ Stop the Source: After the source is confined, stop the source of the spill by turning container upright, closing leaking valves, pumps or bottles and transferring liquids from damaged containers.
■ Evaluate the Incident and Implement Clean Up: Reassess the incident and develop a plan of action for spill cleanup. Use contained absorbents to absorb the remainder of the spill. When fully saturated, dispose of used absorbents in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
■ Decontaminate: Fully decontaminate the site, personnel and equipment by removing or neutralizing the hazardous or contaminated materials that have accumulated during the spill. Be sure to also decontaminate workers to ensure the health and safety of emergency responders.
Please note: only trained responders should respond to a spill. Always follow your company’s spill procedures and guidelines.
By following these management practices, companies can be sure that all cleaning and sanitizing solutions are safely and properly prepared, used and stored. Appropriate sanitizing and cleaning plans play a critical role in panfrmic response across the globe. By safely increasing planning and preparation, you can ensure that you are keeping your employees safe from the dangers of viruses as well as the hidden dangers of improper chemical hygiene.
