Transition Isn’t Easy
he hardest thing about change is the unexpected. The current pandemic has launched every part of our lives into transition as we learn more and more about how Americans will be impacted by the COVID-19 virus.
Daily routines, day-to-day job tasks, policies and procedures are evolving around the latest Coronavirus updates in local com- munities, making it difficult to know if what you are doing as the safety professional for your company or organization is enough.
For me, at OH&S Magazine, the pandemic has changed and
shaped the way we have taken on our editorial for the upcom-
ing issues of 2020. I realized quickly that COVID-19 is top-of-mind for all of our readers. So, we worked to bring you an issue almost entirely dedicated to how to combat this virus from the perspectives of safety professionals taking on COVID-19 in their own unique industries.
In this issue there is plenty of advice on how to move forward with Coronavirus in mind. For those in the construction industry, you can find an article (page 64) on harnessing new technology such as connected devices to make sure employees are staying at least six feet from each other and implementing the Internet of Things to capture real-time data for those onsite to ensure that everyone is healthy, in compliance and working towards a safer workplace.
The coronavirus pandemic has also shifted our conversation about PPE. It is fairly com- mon for companies and organizations to purchase high-dollar personal protection equipment for workers to share. This has posed a series of issues in our new world where mitigating out- breaks is our number-one priority. In this issue there are several articles on how to disinfect PPE properly so that materials are not broken down, rendering the equipment unusable.
OH&S tried to cover all the bases, and included in this issue are even a few articles for safety directors who have to think about the “new normal” in an office space. In this issue is an article on chemical safety and HazCom Plans for the increasing amount of chemical disin- fectants being introduced into the workplace. This article, on page 68, might be useful to you if you are using cleaning supplies in greater quantities or at higher frequencies.
Also included in this issue is a topic that is very important to me—properly donning and doffing a face covering. Since face coverings are recommended and often required around the country, this article, found on page 36, is a great comprehensive guide to understanding what face covering you should wear, when you should wear them and how.
OH&S is dedicated to bringing you information on how COVID-19 is changing the ways safety professionals approach their jobs, but we are not giving up on our trusted information on other safety topics as well. You can also find several non-Coronavirus related articles in this issue as well.
Transition is hard, but that means we just have to adjust. I hope that the resources we have collected for you spark inspiration, change and a healthy workplace.
“The hardest thing about change is the unexpected.”
