Learning and Evolving in Athe Midst of a Pandemic
lot of our daily routines have changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time of this writ- ing (May 2, 2020), the CDC guidelines and advice from health organizations say to continue with social
distancing and limiting travel for only essential reasons. This has led to more people than ever working from home, limiting access to shared workspaces and—for those who are essential workers—the integration of respiratory PPE.
Now, more than ever, it is important for this community of safety professionals to be in-the-know when it comes to new technology, safety policies and procedures, and innovative solu- tions. The digitization of some of the most important tradeshows for the industry will help to drive important knowledge transfer while allowing OHS professionals to safely learn from the com- fort of their own home or workspace. There are also other ways to obtain important information relevant to safety professionals, such as the OH&S website, www.ohsonline.com, our webinar se- ries, podcast and our educational articles in the magazine.
In this issue of OH&S, we cover some of the most important
topics bubbling up due to the pandemic. You can find a highly informative article on adult learning and the virtualization of courses by Pandora Bryce on page 78. The piece goes in- depth on how a blended learning approach using online classes, podcasts, videos and more can help train safety professions more effectively. This information is particularly helpful at a time when in-person classroom trainings are advised against by health organizations.
Also included in this issue are several articles that address COVID-19, like the article on vision protection by Mary Padron on page 70, which addresses using safety glasses and goggles to mitigate infection through the eyes. Mike Enright addresses the hazards of shar- ing electrical safety PPE without a policy for disinfection on page 44, and Dom Tolli wrote an excellent article on managing safety trainings, such as CPR certifications, in the midst of Coronavirus on page 76.
Authors in this issue also tackle what working in a post-pandemic world might look like. Brant Dolan wrote an excellent article on how to utilize a behavior-based safety process as part of a comprehensive employee recognition program during the pandemic, but also how to move forward with these programs when people start slowly coming back to work.
I hope that however you are learning and evolving safety at your business or organization, that you are doing it through the most effective and healthy means.
