IStaying Safe and Healthy
am not going to lie to you. It is difficult for me to write this From the Editor column knowing that OH&S subscribers will not crack open this issue until May 1, nearly a month after I’ve written it. The world is full of rapidly changing in-
formation and uncertainties. If you’re anything like me, you are focusing on the things you can control.
I had about a dozen different article ideas to fill this space, but the one I feel most compelled to write was a piece that addressed those who are feeling unsure and anxious by the news—mainly because this constant state of “not knowing” is something I am learning to navigate as well.
The best piece of advice that I have received in the past few weeks has been recited to me by several people in several different ways, but the sentiment is always the same, “Put yourself first.”
Now, I know what you are thinking. Those in the safety industry are professionally tasked with worrying about the safety, mental stability and physical wellbeing of others. I am not advising you to stop this practice, I am only asking that you take a few moments to listen to what is it that you need.
You see, what happens when you, “worry about yourself first,” is there is a trickle-down effect to all of those around you. If you take the time you need to properly absorb the news, react and process it in a way that works best for you, then those around you will do the same. They may not be able to move through it in the same way that you do, but they will watch you lead by example.
It will always be your job to keep workers safe and healthy, and the fact of the matter is, our subscribers are those who are still getting up every morning and making the com- mute to work. You must do more now than you ever have before to keep morale high and safety top of mind in an environment in which workers are worried and stressed out about a global pandemic.
From the entire OH&S team: We hope that you and those around you are healthy and safe. OH&S will continue to publish relevant and factual information on how the virus impacts the safety and health industry at ohsonline.com.
“You must do more now than you ever have before to keep morale high and safety top of mind.”
